Class 2 Permit Modification to Improve Method for Addressing WTP Byproduct Material
The U.S. Department of Energy is holding a 60-day public comment period and meeting on a proposed Class 2 permit modification to the Hanford Dangerous Waste Permit.
In December 2025, Energy proposed a new initiative to increase tank waste treatment (vitrification) capacity at the LAW Facility. Under this proposal, a mixed waste by-product from the vitrification process may be encapsulated in a concrete-like mixture called grout at a local treatment facility and disposed of offsite at an out-of-state permitted landfill. The current pathway for this mixed waste by-product entails vitrifying it at the LAW Facility with tank waste and disposing of it onsite.
