Arkema Inc. - Public Comment Period for Interim Action Plan, Agreed Order Amendment, and SEPA Determination

Ecology invites you to review and share your comments on documents related to the cleanup of hazardous substances at the Arkema Inc cleanup site. Your feedback is an important part of this process.

We are seeking public input on the following:

  • Draft Interim Action Plan: A plan to conduct a limited cleanup of the site that will help limit arsenic entering the Hylebos Waterway before a cleanup plan for the entire site is developed.
  • Draft Agreed Order Amendment: This is an addition to the 2011 legal agreement that powers the site’s cleanup. This agreement is between Ecology and the Port of Tacoma, who is conducting the cleanup. The amendment adds the Interim Action Work Plan and its schedule to the Port’s scope of cleanup requirements.
  • SEPA Determination of Non-Significance: We determined the proposed cleanup is not likely to cause significant environmental harm. We considered environmental, historical, and cultural factors in this process.

Next Steps
After the public comment period, we will carefully consider and respond to comments. We will work with the Port of Tacoma to finalize the documents, including any changes based on public comments. At that point, the interim action design and construction will begin following the schedule outlined in the Interim Action Plan and Agreed Order Amendment.
Once we finish our review of comments, we will:
  • Post updates and a Responsiveness Summary on Ecology’s Arkema Inc webpage.
  • Email updates to commenters who provided contact info.
